Over the course of several months, I prepared and donated my old legos. I then decided to expand this project to my school, and start taking others’ legos. As of now, I’ve donated ~40 lbs of lego.

This was a course that I took over the summer that I found to be really interesting and fun. It was made available by BYU independent study. I don’t have much in terms of photographs seeing as it’s a class, but I do have a stellar life cycle chart that I made for one of the projects.

I had originally planned to build a third model rocket from the Estes company, but not from a plan or a kit, just from spare parts. I instead decided that it would be more fun to 3d print a rocket entirely from scratch and only add components I couldn’t easily or safely make (the engine, shock cord, parachute). I’ve made all of the components (engine housing, main body, nosecone) and I’m just waiting for the last components to arrive.

I bought two model rocket kits from a reliable manufacturer (Estes) to try to learn the basics of model rocketry. Neither launch was a “success” per se, but I did learn a lot about rocket building. The first launch did fire correctly, but got stuck in the nearby trees. In retrospect, a forest wasn’t an ideal launch spot. The second rocket I made, I embedded an AirTag and an altimeter to track on the rocket. The second launch was conducted in an abandoned parking lot, but the rocket exploded midair and ejected the electrical components to an unknown fate. I was able to recover the rest of the rocket.

For a few weeks, I gathered the materials and knowledge to make a live International Space Station tracker. I used existing code and made it work on a microcontroller linked to a screen (called PyPortal). It took a fair bit of debugging to make it work, but I was so happy once it did.
